For the first time in 35 years, church was in session in Montreal on Saturday night… Metal Church that is!

After a tight Canadian debut by All Sinners, and a blistering set of Bay Area inspired thrash by Heathen, a revamped and re-energized Metal Church lineup stormed the stage of the legendary Foufounes Electriques club, packed to capacity and then some.

Ton Of Bricks, from 1986’ The Dark album, kicked off a set well balanced with classics from the David Wayne and Mike Howe eras of the band, but also strongly representing the group’s latest effort, Dead To Rights. The title track of the latest record, as well as leadoff singles F.a.F.O. and Brainwash Game stood up incredibly well next to set stalwarts Fake Healer, Badlands, Gods Of Wrath, and Watch The Children Pray.

Band founder Kurdt Vanderhoof visibly took great pleasure in the audience response to iconic heavy metal riffs he conceived; while Rick Van Zandt, the lone holdover from the previous version of the band, added texture and bite. New singer Brian Allen (ex-Vicious Rumours) commanded the stage like a boss with fans marvelling at how effortlessly he delivered songs from the band’s earlier efforts, while at the same time making them his own. David Ellefson had heads bopping to the bounce he injected into the baseline of the band’s signature track, Metal Church. Ken Mary, whose resume reads like a who’s who of every genre of metal, made a fine rhythm section partner for Mr. Ellefson. 2026 certainly finds us with a Metal Church lineup for the ages.

All in all, a wonderful night of metal, delivered with power and precision. The band have several more dates left on their current North American run, followed by shows in Europe, and then a 2nd jaunt through America with Armored Saint. Run, don’t walk to pick up tickets, the show is the value ticket of the year, with affordable merch prices to boot.
