Extreme/Living Colour MTELUS Montréal, QC Canada Sept. 28, 2024
Review by Perrin Wolfson, Photo By Jimmy Kay for The Metal Voice
Extreme too often get painted with the “hair band” or “one hit wonder” brush, but to do so truly undermines the versatility and virtuosity of the band. Their 2023 release, Six, was critically acclaimed, and contained some of the heaviest, grooviest, diverse sounds to come out of the rock world this decade. The Boston quartet peppered half of their new record into an end of tour two hour, twenty minute set that left jaws firmly on the floor.
Gary Cherone – lead vocals
Opening with It’s A Monster and Decadence Dance from the beloved Pornograffitti record, the band left no stone unturned after kicking things off at a phrenetic pace. From a medley of tunes off of their lesser known first record, to the best of Pornograffitti, to selections from the albums that followed to less fanfare, and to the aforementioned new tracks, the band turned in perhaps the most perfect of career retrospectives that left no one disappointed. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who served as a master of ceremonies of sorts for the night, dazzled with his guitar pyrotechnics and firmly solidified his status as this generation’s Eddie Van Halen, the rhythm section of Pat Badger and Kevin “K-Figg” Figueiredo was downright funky, and Gary Cherone was not only in strong voice for the last date of a tour that spanned 140 dates across multiple continents, but strong PERIOD.
Nuno Bettencourt – guitars
Accompanying the funk-o-metal carpet ride Extreme are most known for were tender acoustic moments, and a rare cover of Van Halen’s Mean Street, which Nuno noted they had never attempted in front of an audience before. Great songs, great vocals (by 3 members no less), and great playing created an energy that was palpable. The night ended with a well received Rise, the leadoff track of the band’s newest record, sending a strong message that nearly 40 years since forming, this band has more to offer and have ascended once again to the top of the hard rock mountain.
Pat Badger – bass and Gary Cherone – lead vocals
